Which river boat, and how long
Ninety minutes covers the main branch and both forks with time to talk; forty-five is the Magnificent Mile stretch and little else. Open upper decks are the seats worth having, and they go first.
The interiors nobody photographs
Marble, brass and vaulted ceilings behind unmarked doors on Michigan Avenue and LaSalle Street. Small groups, because half of these rooms are still working bank halls and lift lobbies.
The Loop’s Deco stretch
Setback towers, chevrons and chrome around LaSalle and Wacker, best late in the day when the low sun finds the ornament. A short walk with a lot of looking up.

The Sagrada Família
Gaudí died in 1926 with the basilica a fraction built, and it has been going ever since on money from the people queueing outside. Go for the light: the west windows run blue and green in the morning, the east side turns orange and red through the afternoon, and the whole nave changes colour while you stand in it. Tower lifts are booked separately and sell out first.

The river as a gallery
The Great Fire cleared the ground and the city rebuilt upward, so a single bend of water now holds a century and a half of American architecture in order. From mid-river you get the one view the streets cannot give you: whole elevations, uninterrupted, with the setbacks and the crowns visible. The boats stop running when the water ices over.

The Deco mile
Eight hundred buildings from the 1930s survive in a square mile of South Beach, and they survive because a handful of residents fought the bulldozers through the seventies. Porthole windows, eyebrow ledges, terrazzo floors and neon that was restored colour by colour from old photographs. Walk it in the morning or after six, never at noon.
